Ireland in Mexico

The Embassy of Ireland are very pleased to invite you to an evening of Samuel Beckett at the Biblioteca de México, la Ciudadela on Tuesday 4 November.

 

The event will feature dramatized readings by the prestigious Irish actor, Denis Rafter and discussion by Professor Nicholas Grene of Trinity College Dublin and Dr. Julie Bates, moderated by Dr. Mario Murio Murgía, coordinator of the Virginia Woolf Chair of UNAM.

 

The event will include elements in both English and Spanish and is being brought to you under the Bram Stoker Chair of the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana.

 Un actor solo en el escenario en una lectura dramatizada de algunos fragmentos de las obras de Samuel Beckett; pero aun hay mas, es una noche magistral sobre la interpretación de los textos del genial autor dublines y para escuchar las palabras y los sonidos de Dublin a traves de obras como: Waiting for Godot, Endgame y Happy Days, y de novelas como; Molloy o  Malone Dies.

 

 Las obras seleccionadas son una mezcla de comedia y de tragedia, dentro de un mundo que se debate entre lo real y lo absurdo, introduciendonos asi en el laberinto de la vida con toda la fuerza existencial de Beckett.

 

 INTERPRETE: DENIS RAFTER

 

Es un actor que consigue romper cualquier barrera idiomática con sus divertidos monólogos sobre Beckett, Shakespeare y autores irlandeses.   Por su monólogo THE REMARKABLE OSCAR WILDE ha ganado el premio al Mejor Monólogo en el Festival de Teatro de Edimburgo. Residente en España, como director, sus obras han sido estrenadas en los grandes y más emblemáticos teatros de España, como el Teatro Romano de Mérida, el Corral de la Comedia de Almagro, el Lope de Vega de Sevilla, el Teatro Español de Madrid y en dos ocasiones ha sido director invitado por el Teatro Clásico Nacional.  Recientemente ha recibido el Premio Adolfo Marsillach, por la relevante labor desarrollada a lo largo de toda su vida en la dirección de escena, la interpretación y la docencia teatral.

Please note that from 24 June 2014, nationals of Venezuela will be required to be in possession of a visa in order to travel to Ireland.  Visa applications from Venezuela should be sent directly to the Embassy of Ireland in Mexico.  Details of the visa requirements and the procedure to be followed to apply for a visa can be found here.

Special Concert to mark President Higgins' State Visit to Britain will be streamed live

As part of President Higgins’ State Visit to Britain, a concert Ceiliúradh” (Celebration) will be held in the Royal Albert Hall on 10th of April.  As well as some surprise guests on the night, Ceiliúradh will include performances from Paul Brady, The Gloaming, Glen Hansard and Imelda May. Irish people living abroad will be able to tune in live via the RTE Player, which will be streaming the concert from 20:25 Irish time on Thursday April 10.

Nominations now open for Presidential Distinguished Service Award

This award was established by the Government in 2012. It provides recognition by the Irish State for persons living abroad (primarily Irish citizens, those entitled to Irish citizenship and those of Irish descent), who have given sustained and distinguished service to Ireland and/or Irish communities abroad. The categories for consideration are: Irish community support; Arts, Culture and Sport; Charitable works; Business and Education; and Peace, Reconciliation and Development. You can find more information here on the award and the eligibility criteria. If you know someone who fits this description in Mexico, Cuba, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Peru, Colombia or Venezuela you can nominate them for the award by completing this form and returning it to Embassy Mexico (email mexicoembassy@dfa.ie) by 2nd May 2014.
